Villa Dagmar quickly became a social hub for Stockholm’s upper elite in the 1930s. Its lush English gardens and grand halls hosted everything from lavish weddings to intimate gatherings with King Gustav V, a close family friend who frequently spent his summers at the villa.

History

Welcome to a love story beyond the ordinary.

During an unusually warm spring in 1914, a love story unlike any other began. Karl Bergsten, an early stock market player who had found success through speculation in stocks, art, and real estate, wanted to give his beloved young wife, Dagmar, the most beautiful house they could imagine, in one of the most stunning places they had ever seen.

It took four years for the beautiful villa to finally be completed in all its glory. While skilled local craftsmen worked steadily in peaceful Båstad, in collaboration with some of the most renowned architects of the time, war raged across Europe. Yet here on the promenade in Båstad, romance and beauty flourished. Brick by brick, and nail by nail, one of Northern Europe’s most beautiful private residences was erected.

A few years after Karl began the construction of Villa Dagmar in Båstad, he acquired Villa Gerber in Diplomatstaden on Djurgården, and later purchased a property on Strandvägen, which is now Hotel Diplomat, still owned by the same family. Karl renamed Villa Gerber to Villa Dagmar as soon as he acquired it, meaning there were now two magnificent homes sharing the same name, in both Båstad and Diplomatstaden.

When the Stockholm Stock Exchange crashed in 1916, it turned out Karl had made a brilliant move by selling off shares a few years earlier and investing in real estate. Karl, Dagmar, and their 20-year-old daughter, Elisabet, looked to the future with anticipation. The First World War had ended, and the crowning moment was their plan to throw a housewarming party at Villa Dagmar in Båstad.

During the roaring 1930s, Båstad became a gathering place for Stockholm’s upper elite, with Villa Dagmar as a natural central hub. Elisabet married the dashing Davis Cup player Sune Malmström, and the wedding was grandly celebrated in Villa Dagmar’s English garden. King Gustav V became a close friend of the family, spending many delightful years in the garden’s pavilion and in the house’s reception rooms and dining hall.

The Bergsten-Malmström family owned the house until Elisabet’s passing in 1998. In 2000, the current owners took over and began a careful renovation of this stunningly beautiful property, which remains unique in Northern Europe: Villa Dagmar in Båstad. A true cultural heritage in every sense of the word.
